What a missed call really costs a roofing firm

23 October 2026 · 4 min read · Miles Pearson, Founder

Most roofers I speak to know they miss calls. They are up a ladder, on another job or driving between sites, and the phone rings out. What very few of them know is what those missed calls are actually worth, and that number is usually much bigger than they expect.

You have already paid for that call

Every call that comes in has a cost behind it. It might be your advertising, your online listings, the ute outside a job, or years of work building a name that brings in referrals. By the time a homeowner picks up the phone, you have already paid to make that happen.

So a missed call is not a neutral event. It is money you have spent on marketing, walking away before you have had the chance to win the job.

Most callers will not leave a message

It is tempting to think that a serious customer will leave a voicemail. In practice, many do not. In a 2025 survey of 1,000 US consumers by CallRail, only 42% said they leave a voicemail when a business does not answer, and 21% said they immediately call another business instead. Habits vary from country to country, but the direction is clear: plenty of people simply move on to the next name on the list.

A homeowner with water coming through the ceiling is not going to wait patiently for a callback. They will keep ringing until someone answers.

Work out your own number

You do not need a consultant to see roughly what this costs you. You need four figures from your own business:

  • Missed calls. How many calls a week go unanswered, to voicemail or to an engaged line.
  • Genuine leads. Of those, roughly how many are real enquiries rather than sales calls or wrong numbers.
  • Your conversion rate. Out of every ten genuine enquiries, how many usually become paid work.
  • Your average job value. A blend of repairs, re-roofs and commercial work.

Multiply those together and you have a rough weekly figure for work that is slipping away. Even with cautious assumptions, most firms find that a handful of lost jobs a month adds up quickly, because a single re-roof can be worth thousands.

If you have never tracked missed calls before, start this week. Most phone systems and providers can show you a log of missed calls, and a week of real data is far more useful than a guess.

What to do about it

Once you can see the number, the question becomes how to catch more of those calls without hiring someone to sit by the phone. That is the problem we built the RoofersMaven AI Receptionist to solve: it answers every call, asks the right questions about the job and books the inspection straight into your calendar.

If you would like to see how it would handle your calls, book a 20-minute demo. There is no obligation, and you will come away with a clearer idea of what your missed calls are worth.
