The lead mistakes costing UK roofers work
25 October 2026 · 4 min read · Miles Pearson, Founder
Most roofers don't lose leads because they have too few enquiries. They lose them after the enquiry arrives: calls go unanswered, replies come late, and quotes aren't followed up.
In other words, many firms are wasting the leads they already pay for, and fixing that is usually quicker and cheaper than buying more marketing.
Mistakes in handling leads
- Missing calls while on the roof. Crews can't answer from a ladder, so calls go to voicemail during the day and after hours. In a 2022 Fix Radio survey of over 220 UK tradespeople, 60% said they struggle to answer the phone at work, and 34% said they had lost work because of it.
- Assuming people will call back. Research by Moneypenny and Censuswide in January 2026 found only 23% of UK customers would keep trying a business after a missed call or a slow response. The businesses surveyed thought 77% would.
- Replying slowly. The well-known Lead Response Management study found the odds of qualifying a lead were 21 times higher when it was contacted within 5 minutes rather than 30. Many small firms take hours to respond.
- Giving up after one or two attempts. In Velocify's study of 3.5 million sales leads, 93% of the leads that went on to buy were reached by the sixth call, yet half of all leads were never called a second time. Quotes that never get chased are a big leak.
- No CRM, just scraps of paper. Leads end up in voicemail, the inbox and sticky notes, and nobody owns the queue.
Mistakes in getting leads
- Relying on shared lead sites. On sites such as Bark, you pay to contact a customer who may be hearing from four other roofers too, so everyone ends up competing on price.
- A weak Google Business Profile and few reviews. With an incomplete profile and fewer than five reviews, paid ads underperform. Asking for reviews in occasional bursts and ignoring bad reviews also hurts.
- No photos of their work. Homeowners want to see what they're paying for.
- Sending ad traffic to the homepage. It should go to a dedicated landing page with one offer.
- Poorly set-up UK ads. Common faults are targeting too wide an area, generic ad copy, no call tracking, judging success by form fills instead of booked surveys and signed jobs, and copying US templates instead of using UK language and postcodes.
- Not knowing which channel works. Without tracking, they can't tell which jobs came from which spend.
- Depending on one channel. Many only market after storms, which leads to feast-or-famine income.
- Ignoring past customers and referrals. These are their cheapest leads, and one US analysis of more than 2,200 service businesses found referral leads closed at 40 to 60%.
- Not standing out. Without a clear difference, they get undercut by cheaper quotes.
