Why the calls after 6pm matter most

Ask most roofers when they miss calls and they will tell you it is during the day, when they are on a roof. That is true, but the calls that cost the most often arrive after the working day has finished.
When homeowners actually call
Homeowners tend to deal with their roof when they are at home to see it. That means evenings, after work, and weekends. A damp patch on the bedroom ceiling gets noticed at 9pm. A slipped tile gets spotted on Saturday morning. A storm overnight means a garden full of debris on Sunday.
These are often motivated callers. Something has gone wrong, they can see it, and they want it sorted. They are also the callers least likely to wait.
Voicemail is not a plan
For most firms, a call after 6pm goes to voicemail, and the voicemail gets checked the next morning. By then the homeowner has usually rung someone else. If another firm answered, or called back first, the job has very likely gone.
Even when a message is left, the first callback the next day often turns into a game of phone tag, because the homeowner is now at work.
The usual options, and their limits
- Taking calls yourself. It works for a while, but answering the phone every evening and weekend is a quick route to burnout, and calls still get missed.
- A traditional answering service. Someone picks up and takes a message, which is better than voicemail. However, a general answering service rarely knows the difference between a leak and a re-roof, so you still have to call everyone back to find out what they need.
- Leaving it until morning. This costs nothing up front, and it is the option most likely to hand the job to a competitor.
What good after-hours handling looks like
Whatever you choose, the aim is the same. Every evening and weekend call should be answered straight away, the caller should be asked the right questions about the job, and their details should reach you in a form you can act on first thing.
Ideally, the survey is already booked into your diary by the time you start work, and anything genuinely urgent has been flagged so you can decide whether to respond that night.
That is how the RoofersMaven AI Receptionist works. It answers every call, at any hour, qualifies the job, books the survey and sends you the details by text and email the moment the call ends. If you would like to hear it for yourself, book a 20-minute demo.
